—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

The University of Warsaw has launched a new scholarship programme, ‘the Scholarship for 5’. The new benefit is intended for doctoral students at doctoral schools who have had to extend the deadline for the submission of their dissertation for objective reasons (first extension). The scholarships will be paid until the end of December 2024. Their exact amount will be determined after the applications have been reviewed. The budget allocated for the payment of the scholarships is PLN 500,000.

Who is the the Scholarship for 5 for?

The Scholarship for 5 is open to doctoral students at doctoral schools who have been approved for the first extension of their dissertation deadline, i.e. after 48 months of education.

Who can receive the scholarship?

The scholarship is only for those doctoral students who have not submitted their dissertation by the deadline due to objective reasons beyond the control of the doctoral student. The application must be accompanied by ½ of the dissertation, approved by the supervisor, or equivalent research results approved by the supervisor.

How much will the scholarships amount to?

The budget allocated for the payment of scholarships is PLN 500,000. The exact amount of the scholarship will be announced after the applications have been reviewed.

When and where can applications be submitted?

Applications for the the Scholarship for 5 should be submitted between 10 and 29 October 2024 via university electronic mail to the following e-mail address:  phd.nh@uw.edu.pl

Applications should be submitted with the usage of the official template.

Is the scholarship subject to repayment?

In justified cases, the scholarship holder is called upon by the director of the doctoral school to repay the Scholarship for 5 if, within 12 months from the date of payment of the the Scholarship for 5 they have not demonstrated significant progress in the preparation of the dissertation.

I wanted to ask if I understand correctly that in the application for the scholarship in the fifth year, you have to include at least 50% of the pages that will be in the final version of the dissertation? What does this condition of 1/2 of the dissertation mean ? Can these 50% of the pages be changed later?

The fragment of the dissertation attached to the application may be subject to corrections and updates at further stages of work on the dissertation. At the same time, the submitted dissertation fragment must objectively constitute at least 1/2 of the dissertation, e.g. in comparison with the information presented in the Individual Research Plan, and be approved as such by the supervisor.

Can I, as a 4th year doctoral student with no entitlement to a scholarship (in fact, I realized 48 months of education, 1 year at another Doctoral School; despite NCN funding, I have lost my entitlement to a 4th year scholarship) apply for this scholarship?

No. The Scholarship for 5 is intended for doctoral students at doctoral schools, after completing 48 months of education at the University of Warsaw, on the first extension. The scholarship is not available to 4th year doctoral students.

Can a doctoral student in their fifth year (first extension of their doctorate) apply for this scholarship?

Yes.

What exactly might be the equivalent research results approved by the supervisor?

– can it be, for example, a collection of manuscripts of publications with research results + the supervisor’s opinion on the matter?

– a description of the results obtained and the research carried out, together with confirmation and the supervisor’s opinion?

This is decided by the supervisor as a specialist in the discipline and the dissertation mentor. Please consult your supervisor.
