Code of Good Supervision Practices

CODE OF GOOD PRACTICES FOR SUPERVISORS [FILE – in English, PLIK- in Polish]

1. In their contacts with Doctoral Students, Supervisors should follow the ethos of the academic work, as expressed, for example, in the mission statement of the University of Warsaw, especially in reference to creating academic community, and should therefore treat the Doctoral Students as ‘young scientists’.
2. Supervisors should be familiar with the Code of the Ethical Conduct being at force at the University of Warsaw, as well as with the general provisions and those accepted at the UW – concerning rules, terms and criteria of education in the Doctoral School of Humanities.
3. Supervisors aim to maintain regular scientific contact with their Doctoral Students; this contact should, if possible, take the form of direct consultations (in person or remote), at least several times per semester, and should not be limited to the email correspondence.
4. Supervisors should encourage their Doctoral Students to participate actively in the academic life, e.g. by undertaking collaborative scientific projects, identifying opportunities for scientific cooperation with centres in the country and abroad, helping to choose conferences, submit grant proposals and articles for publication, etc. Supervisors should support their Doctoral Students in their scientific development and in pursuing their scientific plans.
5. The duties of the Supervisors include not only substantive supervision, but also formal statutory requirements that affect the realisation of the Doctoral Students’ education.
6. As a part of supervision of the quality of the doctoral dissertation, Supervisors may express constructive criticism and their opinion on the way of implementation of the Individual Research Plan, performance of doctoral student’s duties, etc.
7. In the event of a difficult life circumstances of health situation, the Doctoral Students can expect to be treated with kindness and understanding by the Supervisor.
